Newly Acquiring Certificate of Eligibility

Foreign nationals wishing to enter Japan must apply for a visa suitable for their travel purpose at a Japanese embassy or consulate abroad. When applying for a visa, the one need to submit a “Certificate of Eligibility” issued by the Immigration Bureau of Japan in advance (except for short-term stay visas). 

The International Center provides proxy applications for the issuance of the “Certificate of Eligibility” for Student, Cultural Activities, and Professor.

Application Period

Up to 4 months prior to the departure (deadline within the university)
(The procedure has to be done by the hosting department on behalf of the applicant.)

Procedure

  1. Submit all the required application documents to the International Center.
  2. The Center will check them and fill in the items in the form and issue the required documents and submit them to the immigration office
  3. The immigration office will send the certificate by postal mail within one to three months.
  4. Forward the original certificate to the applicant.

  1. Application form for issuance of a Certificate of Eligibility
  2. ID Photo (4cm × 3cm)
  3. Passport
  4. Certificate of admission (acceptance letter etc.)
  5. Certificate of ability to provide economic support (certificate of scholarship, a copy of bankbook etc.)

[For Status of Cultural Activities]

  1. Application form for issuance of a Certificate of Eligibility
  2. ID Photo (4cm × 3cm)
  3. Passport
  4. Documents or certificates that prove your activity, duration, etc.
  5. Documents or thesis to clarify your past academic performanc
  6. Certificate of ability to provide economic support (certificate of scholarship, a copy of bankbook etc.)

  2. ID Photo (4cm × 3cm)
  3. Passport
  4. Documents or certificates issued by the host institution proving your activity, duration, position, compensation etc., such as a certificate of employment
